(Remember the Willie Horton ads?) I suppose that they don't want to be seen as "sinking to their (the Republican's) level". Unfortunately, sinking to their level (or lower, as Karl Rove has done time after time) *works!* It's an *effective* means of getting voters to, if not *like* your guy, at least *dislike* the other guy enough to *vote for* your guy -- although, admittedly, at the risk of making voters cynical about both of the candidates *and* the process itself.
